How to care for 3D printed frames
Simple, nylon-specific habits for 3D printed eyewear care that keep your frames working and looking the way they were designed.
Most glasses care advice was written for a different kind of frame. Acetate, metal, wire. It assumes a material you soften with heat, a glossy surface that shows every smudge, and a frame you expect to replace in a year or two.
A 3D printed nylon frame asks for something slightly different. Not more effort. Just the right habits, in the right order.
This is a short guide to 3D printed eyewear care, written for the way these frames are actually made. Get the habits in place early, and the frame you chose for how it looks will keep looking and feeling that way for years.
Why nylon needs its own approach
Blynq frames are printed layer by layer in a medical-grade, biocompatible nylon. The material has shape memory. It flexes under pressure and returns to its original form. That's why the frames feel forgiving in your hand and settle so easily on your face.
The surface is different too. There's no glossy coating. The finish is matte and lightly textured, a direct result of the printing process. It doesn't show fingerprints the way polished acetate does.
But texture holds onto things a smooth surface lets slide off. Skin oils. Sunscreen. Dust from a long day.
So good frame maintenance for nylon isn't about polishing. It's about rinsing, drying, and respecting heat. If you're curious how the material compares, we unpack it in Nylon frames vs acetate.
The everyday clean
These are the 3D printed eyewear care instructions we'd give anyone picking up their first pair.
Set them down lenses up
On a flat surface, lenses facing the ceiling. It's the simplest habit, and the one that saves the most lenses.
Rinse before you wipe
For light marks, run the frame under clean water, then dry it with a microfiber optical cloth.
Use mild soap on heavier days
A drop of mild liquid soap, worked in gently with your fingertips, then rinsed off fully.
Never wipe them dry
A dry cloth on a dusty frame drags grit across the lenses and into the texture of the finish.
That last one matters more than it sounds. Most scratches don't come from accidents. They come from a quick wipe on a shirt hem.
What to keep away from your frames
Nylon is tough. A few everyday things still work against it.
The main one
Heat
A car dashboard in summer. The edge of a stove. A hair dryer pointed the wrong way. If it's too hot to leave your phone there, it's too hot for your frames.
The next one
Harsh cleaners
Skip household sprays, alcohol wipes, nail polish remover, and anything with ammonia or acetone. Water and mild soap do everything you need.
The quiet one
Pressure
Sitting on your frames, sleeping in them, or pushing them up onto your head stretches the fit a little at a time.
Sustained heat stresses the material and the finish over time. Harsh chemicals can dull a matte surface and wear down lens coatings. And while shape memory is forgiving, it isn't an invitation.
Let the hinges do their job
German-engineered hinges are made for smooth, consistent movement, opened and closed thousands of times. You can help them by taking your glasses off with both hands, one on each temple, instead of pulling from one side. There's more on why they matter in German hinges: the detail that changes everything.
If the fit ever feels off, resist the urge to bend things back yourself. Acetate is often adjusted with heat. 3D printed nylon behaves differently, and home adjustments tend to do more harm than good. A Blynq authorised optician can check the alignment properly.
Give them somewhere to rest
Your Blynq case is made from natural felt. Use it whenever the frames aren't on your face: in a bag, on a bedside table, in the car.
Felt needs a little care of its own. Some shedding is normal and isn't a defect. A soft cloth or a lint roller keeps it clean, and a slightly damp cloth handles anything deeper. Keep it away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight, and don't stack heavy things on top of it.
Care protects the design, not just the frame
A considered frame is built from decisions. The angle of a bridge. The weight of a brow line. Proportions that took weeks to get right.
Care is how those decisions survive daily life. When a frame stays aligned, it sits on your face the way it was designed to. When the finish stays clean, the colour reads true. Dune stays warm. Graphite stays deep.
A few seconds of rinsing each day is what keeps the design doing its job.
Lenses up. Rinse, never wipe dry. Keep them cool. Both hands. Case when they're off.
Built for the long run
Every Blynq frame carries a 24-month warranty against manufacturing defects. If something fails because of how it was made, the frame or the defective part is replaced at no cost.
We offer that because we trust what goes into each frame. The nylon. The hinges. The precision of a process that puts every line exactly where it was designed. Built for the long run isn't a promise we make lightly.
The warranty doesn't cover accidental damage, misuse, or unauthorised repairs, and prescription lenses are excluded. That's where your side of things comes in. The habits above are how you hold up your end.
To make a claim, take your signed and stamped certificate to any Blynq authorised optician. Keep it somewhere safe.
A routine, not a chore
That's the whole list. It takes less time than reading this paragraph. And it means the frame you chose will still feel like yours years from now, which is the idea behind the longevity of considered design.
